Driver's Licence in Australia

Driver's licence

Foreigners on short term visit may rent a car and drive with a valid foreign driver’s licence for up to 3 months in Australia. Longer than that, you need to get an Australian driving licence from an Australian state.

To drive in Australia, the licence should be a full driving licence held for at least 2 years with no major endorsements. Car renters in Tasmania must have held a Full driver's licence for at least 3 years and not be on a provisional licence. Provisional licences are not accepted in Tasmania.

If your domestic driving licence is not in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP/IDL) or an official translation in English is required when you drive in Australia. Please note that an International Driving Permit (often referred to as an International Driving Licence) does not replace the requirement for a regular driving licence. And you must carry your current overseas driver’s licence, IDP or translation with you all the time when driving in Australia.

Tips

Some Australian car rental companies require you to have a photo ID licence. If your foreign licence does not have a photo ID, you should get an IDP before travelling to Australia if you intend to rent a car. UK drivers with the new-style photo card licence will need both the paper counterpart and photo card. UK licence holders who have a paper licence only will also need an official photo for identification when driving in Australia.

All states require Australians from other states to get a new state licence after 3 month's residence (with some specific exceptions). Some states also require New Zealanders to get a state driver’s licence after they have been in Australia for 3 months.

Age requirement

To hire a car in Australia you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category). There is no maximum driving age in Australia, however, a medical certificate is recommended for drivers over 75 years old. Ultimately, it is the location's decision if they will rent to a person over the age of 75. In Tasmania, drivers 75 years and over must present a medical certificate at the time of pickup. Each car hire company has its own age requirements. If you're 21-25, you are likely to have to pay a young driver fee. If you're 65 or older, you may have to pay a senior driver fee.

Rent is thrifty, lined up for a while. Not very understanding of English, the staff also wrote a key message to me, including the total amount of insurance (less than 25 years of age need to pay insurance), will buckle the deposit fee, but also the time of the car, etc.. Do not sell other services.

Queuing time is still the normal range, 15-20 minutes, so the efficiency of foreign, also cannot be forced to check their condition; not explain and record, there are potential risks; poor condition, car 40 thousand kilometers, scoring almost everywhere, four wheels, four doors, front bumper has obvious scar, but experience take the initiative to contact the service personnel records, forensics, and take photos, and was able to get out; no extra to sell, just ask a sentence, he didn't say what you refused. General feeling in general.

In the Southern Cross Station Road, large stores, the clerk expressed very clearly in English, even if English is a little poor can understand. Take the car to see the car scratches, but did not specify on the list, back to the store to ask, answer these scratches are too small, do not care. Car space is good, two people no problem in the suitcase, a happy car rental experience.
