Driver's License in New Zealand

At the time of rental in New Zealand, all drivers must present a full and valid driver's license from the renters country of residence and the license should be held for at least 1 or 2 years (according to different car rental company).

An International Driving Permit is highly recommended for international drivers. If your domestic driver's license is not printed in English (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc), an International Driving Permit (IDP/IDL) or an official translation in English is required when you drive in New Zealand.

Please note that an International Driving Permit (often referred to as an International Driver's License) does not replace the requirement for a regular driver's license. And you must carry your current overseas driver’s license, IDP or translation with you all the time when driving in New Zealand.

For driver's licenses from countries not part of the international driver's license treaty, a notarized translation must be presented with the original license or a translation by an NZ Transport Agency authorized translation service.

Pink issued New Zealand Driver Licenses are not accepted.
