Driver's License in Mexico

To rent a car in Mexico, most car rental companies require a full driver's license held for a minimum of 2 years with no major endorsements.


If your domestic driver's license is not in English (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc), an International Driving Permit (IDP/IDL) or an official translation in English is required when you drive in Mexico.


Please note that an International Driving Permit (often referred to as an International Driver's License) does not replace the requirement for a regular driver's license. And you must carry your current overseas driver’s license, IDP or translation with you all the time when driving in Mexico.

4.3Hertz Guadalajara not very organized and the cars are not in a good shape

The process to get and return the vehicle is terrible, they try to force you get additional insurance even if you already have one. The car was very dirty and in terrible condition, scratches and dents everywhere and a larger hit in the front bumper. The inside wasn't any better, a broken handle to open the trunk, stained and dusty seats, I even had to clean the inside of the windshield because I couldn't see with the sunlight reflecting on the dirty windshield. The car return was also a problem, first to find the right place because Hertz is not with the other car rental companies and I didn't see any sign that showed the correct path, when you get there you have to wait until their personnel goes to your car and verifies the gas level, condition of the car and keys which took a little more than 10 minutes, and after that you have to head into the office, make another line and close your contract, another 15 minutes. In general, not a good experience

6.3Trying to have you pay insurance coverage twice - Rest was OK.

Initially wanted to charge a "safety deposit" of 12,000 USD on our American Express Platinum card. No kidding. Then want to charge us $140 extra for LIA coverage. Lists displayed publicly were showing a different price (lol). Agent told us listings were outdated just to have us pay more. We found the listings were perfectly valid, so he made up another excuse (lol). After showing detailed coverage included with the card and losing almost one hour, agent "mysteriously" discovered an insurance package for half the price (he entered manually a 60% discount... which means he knew exactly what he was doing). Borderline scammy. Drop off went super well with a nice lady but pickup left a bitter taste.

el único problema que tuvimos fue que cuando en Hertz nos ofrecieron seguros adicionales, al darnos el precio no especificaron que era por día y nosotros pensamos que era el precio para el total de la reserva. First car they gave me was a repaired one, all seats were dirty and smelled very very bad, kind of wet. Alamo's counter desk guy told me that the car is what I paid for and if I wanted something better the cost would go double; after one day of use I asked them to change the car (I rented because I needed to transport my new born baby from hospital to my mother in law's house) . They did change it three days after and all seats were dirty too smelled like wet too, the air conditioner was better but not good enough. Honestly, I am completely not happy. I was expecting a clean, very good condition, secure and fully functional car and did not happen with the two cars they gave me. Thanks

2.7Worst customer experience ever

Worst company ever. Hertz cancun is a pure robbery. You are in front of Mexican sales guys in Armani jeans doing all they can to scare you and charge you their high insurance coverage. On which they surely have a huge commission. They fear you about Mexico and it’s roads, use poor sales speech but you have no choice to take it because for me it was either their insurance to pay or a huge drop off fee in another location. I had to pay 1200$ instead of the 480$ in my easyrent voucher. Worst holidays start ever

The size of the vehicle did not correspond to the one I rented. When I pointed out to the staff the situation, they indicated to me that the reservation code corresponded to a vehicle of the Nissan March scheme, which although it was in good condition, it was much smaller than the size of a volswagen golf that was the I rented. The company explained to me that my reservation had the CCMR sip code that corresponds to a Nissan March and not a Volswagen Golf, so there was no way I could get a bigger car with the payment I made.

8.3Typical car hire experience - slow collection process with insurance up sell - otherwise great

Had a long wait to collect the car from Hertz standing in the queue with up sell to go premium and jump to the front. Tried to sell additional insurance to me using scare tactics despite explaining I had an annual policy covering the excess and didn’t want it. Car was clean except on front where washer fluid was probably spilt during a top-up. Taking photos of the condition of the car and emailing to the customer is a nice innovation by Hertz. Car was problem free throughout hire. Dropping off the car was super easy and quick. If only the collection could be like this.

Q1.What is an insurance excess?

The excess is the amount you'll only be liable for in case of damage(under Collision Damage Waiver) or theft(under Theft Protection) of the vehicle.
Information about the excess will be clearly stated in the price inclusion when you reserve a car on EasyRentCars.

Q2. How can I add an addtional driver?

You are advised to make a request upon your arrival at the rental counter. Additional charge per day will incur unless '1 Additional Driver Included' is stipulated on the rental.
Please note that the same licence and age requirement applys to the additonal driver. The addtional driver is supposed to present the required licence document along with the main driver at pickup.

Q3.What if I want to pick up or drop off my rental car out of office hours?

However, pick-up or drop-off out of general opening hours may subject to an extra fee unless self-service pick-up or drop-off is available.

If you want to pick up your car in one country and drop it in another, your search results will show you cars you can do that with.
If you're planning to cross any borders during your trip, bear in mind:
